CWS appeal: Democratic Republic of Congo conflict
DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO Escalating violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo has displaced more than 1 million people in the last two years, and left 5 million dead since fighting intensified 1998. War-related conflict and disease make it the deadliest conflict since World War II.
As fighting continues, an estimated 1,200 people die daily as a direct or indirect result of the conflict - more than half of them children. The fluid nature of the fighting means continuous displacement for non-combatants, making it difficult for humanitarian providers to reach those in need to provide assistance. As fighting closes off internal food sources and those displaced flee to more remote areas, malnutrition is already beginning to grip many. Read more » |

CWS appeal: Cambodia-Thai border crisis/community displacement
CAMBODIA-THAI BORDER A decades-long dispute over border territory erupted in fighting last month between Thailand and Cambodia. The violence displaced hundreds of families in one of the poorest regions of Asia. Church World Service field personnel in the region report even though the overall situation is quiet now, half the population of Chup Korki Lech and Chup Korki Koeuth Villages in Banteay Meanchey province remain displaced. Families are taking shelter in goat stables, tents or thatch huts.
As government resources draw to a close December 1, CWS is assembling an emergency response lasting three months to assist approximately 80 families, based in Deybak. Read more » | |
